I saw a weird moss on a hike near Asheville that made me look at plants totally differently

I was on a trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains about two months ago, just past a little creek, when I saw this patch of moss on a rock that looked almost blue. I got down close and realized it wasn't just one color, it had these tiny, hair-like red stems mixed in. I snapped a picture and spent the whole drive home trying to figure out what it was. Turns out, after checking my field guide and asking online, it's a type of 'broom moss' and those red parts are its sporophytes. I'd always just seen moss as green carpet, but now I notice all these details, like how different types grow on north versus south sides of trees. It's like a whole hidden world opened up. Has anyone else had a moment like that with a common plant where you suddenly saw the details for the first time?

Wait, so you're telling me moss has been out here with its own tiny architecture this whole time and we just missed it? I feel like I've been walking past a secret city.

Ever just think of moss as a green carpet? This post made me look closer. Those tiny stems are like support columns, and the way it holds water is its own plumbing system. I used to see it as just a simple plant, but now I see the whole tiny skyline.

Holy smokes, you mean those red things are literally sex organs for the moss? I always thought they were just dead bits or something weird growing on it. That's wild to think they're basically tiny towers shooting out spores.
