Bought a $60 'self-watering' pot for my fiddle leaf and it rotted the roots in 6 weeks
I picked up one of those fancy self-watering planters from a shop in Portland, thinking it would make my life easier while I was away on weekends. The thing kept the soil way too wet at the bottom and the roots turned to mush by the time I noticed the leaves dropping. Has anyone else had bad luck with these pots or did I just get a lemon?

Wait, are we really calling a $60 pot a total disaster because of one bad experience? I feel like there's a good chance you just got a dud or maybe the plant wasn't right for that setup. A lot of these self-watering pots work fine if you know what you're doing, you just have to let the soil dry out between refills. Six weeks is fast for total root rot unless you were drowning it or the pot had no drainage at the bottom. Maybe try a regular pot with a saucer next time and skip the fancy gimmick, it's not like your fiddle leaf is that picky.

Total disaster" feels like a stretch. I bet a lot of people have decent luck with those pots, @diana20, they're probably just not for every plant.
