Spent 3 hours last night trying to prove a commenter was a bot, and now I'm not so sure he was
So there I was at 11pm on a Tuesday, deep in the replies of a local news page, because this guy named Dave kept posting the exact same paragraph about a bridge project in Toledo under 14 different posts. Same punctuation. Same weird spacing before periods. I copied his text into two AI detector sites and both said 97% likely generated, so I felt like a detective and started building my case in my head. Then it hit me, my own aunt types like that, she double spaces after periods and repeats herself in Facebook comments all the time because she's 71 and just learned how to copy paste. I went back and read Dave's whole profile, and there he was at a bowling league in 2018, plus a photo of a half eaten sandwich he posted in 2021 with zero engagement, which honestly is the most human thing I've ever seen. Three hours gone, and the only thing I proved is that my bot radar is basically just vibe checking people. Where do you all draw the line between someone who types like a robot and an actual robot?
My buddy did the same thing last month with some guy in a fishing group who kept posting the same reply about lake levels. Turned out the dude was just old and copy pasting from his notes app on a flip phone. Bot radar is really just us guessing at this point.
