Update: I was lining my spine folds with the wrong side of the paper for months
I was working on a leather journal last week and the spine kept cracking when I opened it, which made no sense because I was using good quality paper. My teacher in the Chicago workshop pointed out I'd been using the smoother side of the paper against the leather, not the rougher side that grabs the glue better. How do you all check which side is which on your paper stock?

Oh man, I just hold it up to the light... the side with more texture usually looks a bit softer. The smooth side is shinier.

Interesting point, but my experience is the opposite. The textured side often catches more light, making it look brighter and less soft to me. A smooth surface can have a gentle, muted shine. My old cotton sheets are a good example, the nubby side always looks more crisp under the lamp.
