Switched from a bone folder to a Teflon folder for my leather work

I was getting small marks on some dark blue goatskin covers, even after being really careful. My teacher at the Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts suggested trying a Teflon folder instead. After using it on my last three projects, the leather is totally smooth with no shiny spots or scuffs. Has anyone else made this switch and noticed a big difference?

Yeah, it's funny how often the right tool is just a different material. I see it everywhere now, like plastic dough scrapers instead of metal ones in the kitchen.

Forget the kitchen, look at car parts. Plastic intake manifolds used to be crazy, now they're normal because they don't get as hot and save weight.

It's not always about the right material, sometimes it's about the right job. Plastic manifolds work because engines run cooler now. But some things just need metal. A plastic dough scraper can't get under baked-on stuff like a metal spatula can. The old tools stick around because they solve problems the new stuff can't.
