Shoutout to the older guy in Tulsa who told me to stop using PVA on spine linings
I used to glue every spine lining down with PVA because that is what I learned from a library repair class back in 2016, and my books always cracked right at the hinge after a year or two of use. An older binder named Walt at a shop in Tulsa watched me finish a rebind and just shook his head and asked me why I was making the spine rigid on purpose. He showed me how to do a hollow back with wheat starch paste instead, and the difference is night and day since the paste stays flexible and lets the spine move. My last six rebinds have gone out the door with no hinge issues at all, and I feel dumb for not asking sooner. Anyone here still using straight PVA on linings, or did you switch over too?
