Remember when we used to make our own paste instead of buying it?
I was cleaning out my shop yesterday and found an old jar of cooked wheat paste I made back in 2018. Smelled like old socks but man that stuff held my bindings together like nothing else. Now I just order the methylcellulose online from Talas for $12 a bag. It's easier for sure but I kinda miss the ritual of cooking it up on a Saturday morning. My first mentor back in Chicago swore by the flour and water method and said the store bought stuff was for quitters. Wonder how many of us still do it the old way?

Nah, the store stuff works fine and I don't miss sniffing flour paste fumes all morning.

Used to be all about the homemade stuff myself, thought it was the only real way. But after a bad batch of paste got moldy inside my sketchbook and ruined a month of drawings, I switched over and never looked back. The store bought methylcellulose is just so reliable, and it doesn't stink up the whole house. Now I save the cooking for special projects where I really want that thick, gritty texture. Ever have a batch go bad on you like that
