Old school bookcloth vs modern coated stuff
I was rebinding an old novel last month and used a coated buckram from a big craft store. It peeled right off the boards after two weeks. Switched to a traditional starch-filled cloth I got from a specialty shop and that thing is still solid. Anyone else find the modern fabrics just don't hold up like the old methods?

Modern coated stuff is basically just plastic pretending to be cloth. I tried that coated buckram from Michael's once for a journal cover. Looked fine for about a week. Then it started peeling off like bad sunburn. The starch-filled stuff actually breathes and stays put. Not flashy but it works.

@max_ross nailed it honestly. That coated stuff is just asking for trouble down the line. Starch buckram might not look as fancy out of the package but it actually sticks around. I've got projects from years ago still holding up fine with the old school stuff. Why chase the shiny finish when it just flakes off on you?
