Chose between PVA and hide glue on a 1890s family Bible, and I keep second guessing myself
A customer brought in her great grandmother's Bible from 1893 with a spine that had come completely loose, and I stood there in my shop in Boise for 20 minutes trying to pick between PVA and hide glue. I went with hide glue because it reverses with heat and water, and I told myself that was the safe call for something that old, but the repair took me 3 hours longer and the joint still feels a little stiff when you open it past 90 degrees. Did I overthink it, or would you have just grabbed the PVA and moved on?
