Changed my mind on cheap thread after a $6 spool blew apart mid-project
I always bought the good linen thread, figured the cheap stuff was a waste of time. Then a bookbinder named Ray at a meetup in Columbus handed me a $6 spool of bonded polyester and told me to just try it on a practice text block. That cheap spool held tension through three full sections without fraying once, and I've used it on six books since. The expensive stuff still has its place for the final sewing, but I was wrong to write off the budget option completely. Anyone else got a cheap material that surprised them?
