Why I keep ruining book club debates with author trivia
I started looking up every author's life before our club meets. Now I always mention it when we discuss the book. For example, with that bestseller about war, I brought up the writer's military service. People said it didn't matter to the plot. It makes debates tense and off topic. I see their point, but I think it adds depth. Now I'm torn between sharing insights and keeping peace.

Actually, the author's life can change how you see the whole book. Their personal stuff often shows up in the writing. It might make talks messy, but that's part of digging deeper.

Check when it was published against their bio timeline, helps a ton.

My friend Mark joined a poetry group last spring. He looked up every poet's personal drama before each meeting. He kept mentioning their messy divorces when the group talked about the poems. It really annoyed everyone because they just wanted to focus on the writing. Your book club problem sounds just like that, where author facts sidetrack the real discussion. I think you should only share that stuff if the group is okay with it, maybe after the main debate.
