The thing that saved my group was picking a book where the debate was built in. We did "The Turn of the Screw" and just argued about whether the ghosts were real for six weeks. Nobody had to win. We just kept pulling weird quotes to back up our side. That librarian thing is funny though, we never got that far. We just lost three members who wanted to talk about their feelings instead of body count.
