Took me 3 hours to figure out why my book club hated that ending
Honestly, I spent 45 minutes alone trying to find if the author ever explained what happened to the dog in chapter 8. Turns out there's a deleted blog post from 2019 that cleared it up, but nobody in my group wanted to dig that deep. Has anyone else's debate fallen apart over a missing detail like that?

Man, that deleted blog post thing is such a killer. I've been there where you find something like that and suddenly it makes the whole story click, but by then everyone's already made up their minds. It reminds me of when my group argued for two hours about whether a character was dead or not, and it turned out the author had a footnote in a later edition that explained it was a dream sequence. Nobody wanted to accept it because they'd already decided it was a ghost story, so the debate just fizzled out into this weird silence. The missing detail is like a puzzle piece that changes the whole picture, but once people have their own theory locked in, it's almost impossible to get them to look at it again.

weird silence" is exactly the right way to put it. That's what kills the whole vibe. I had a similar thing happen with a thriller where the main character's hidden past was the big twist, but my group had already decided it was a doppelganger situation based on some misread clue in chapter 2. I found an interview with the author where he straight up says it's not a doppelganger, it's a childhood trauma thing, and I bring it up and everyone just stares at me like I'm the one who's wrong. It's like once the group picks a theory, the author's actual words become fake news or something. And then the discussion just dies because nobody wants to admit they spent two hours arguing about something that was never even up for debate.
