The night our book club picked a 900 page novel in one meeting and I still have notes about it
Last month at our Thursday night meetup in the back room of a pizza place in Boise, we voted on next month's pick and 7 of 11 hands went up for a 900 page doorstop. I was one of the 4 who wanted something shorter, and I figured fine, I'll just skim it like always. Three weeks later I showed up with nothing read and got caught when someone asked me about a scene from page 400. Now I keep a rule: if I did not finish, I say so in the first 2 minutes before anyone can ask. Has anyone else had a club where the person who suggests the longest book is also the one who never finishes it?
Our club had that exact guy for two years, always pushed the 800 pagers and quit around chapter 3. We started having everyone give a quick "where I'm at" before we dig in and it killed all the awkwardness. Now we just laugh about it and move on.
