Stop buying those $15 discussion question card packs

I dropped $15 on a set of 50 book discussion question cards before our last meeting, thinking they would save the night. They were all generic stuff like 'how did this character make you feel' and 'what was the author's message.' My group already asks those questions naturally, and the cards just killed the flow because nobody wanted to stop talking to read from a card. The only useful one was about comparing the ending to a movie adaptation, but we could have gotten that from any free list online. Now I just spend 10 minutes before each meetup writing 4 or 5 specific questions about the actual book, and the conversations have been way better. Has anyone else wasted money on those kits, or do you have a cheap method for making sure the discussion doesn't die out? Our last meeting ran short and I need ideas for longer debates.

Is it really that big of a deal though? Like, you lost 15 bucks and learned a lesson, that's practically a steal compared to how much some people spend on fancy book club snacks. Honestly, most people just want to chat about the story and their gut reactions, not play a board game about it. If your group runs short, just throw out one hot take about the ending and watch everyone argue for 20 minutes. That's free, and it works every time.
