Spent $180 on a book club pick nobody liked

Our book club decided to go with a new release last month. It was getting rave reviews everywhere. So I dropped $180 on ten copies for the group. Turned out every single person hated it. The characters were flat and the ending made no sense. Felt like the reviewers got paid for those good words. Now I'm stuck with a stack of books nobody wants. How do you pick a book without getting burned like this?

Funny how book hype is just like those viral recipes. Everyone loves it until you actually cook it.

Three months from now nobody's going to remember the hype but reading a bad book together can make for some of the best discussions you'll have as a group. Maybe start a little book swap at your next meeting to trade those copies with other members for something different.

Oh man that's so true! My book club picked this super hyped thriller last year that was honestly terrible. Like the plot made no sense and the ending was a total letdown. But you know what? We spent like two whole hours laughing about how bad it was and someone brought wine and we ended up having way more fun than when we read the serious award winner. We started doing this thing where we bring our unwanted books to swap and one girl actually found this old cookbook from the 70s that became our inside joke for months. So yeah I totally agree sometimes the bad books are the ones you remember most. Just roll with it!
