Serious question, has anyone else had a book club meeting turn into a real argument?
Last week at my group's discussion of 'The Silent Patient', things got really heated. One member, Sarah, said the main character's actions were 'completely justified and realistic given her trauma.' Another, Mark, cut her off and called that view 'dangerous and a total misreading of the text.' It got so tense we had to take a five minute break. I've been in this club for two years and I've never seen it get that personal. It made me think we need clearer rules for debate, like no interrupting and sticking to the book's facts, not just our feelings. How do other clubs handle it when a friendly debate starts to feel like a fight?

Sounds like your book club needs a referee.

Strongly disagree honestly. Getting into heated arguments about books means people actually care about what they read, a little passion never killed anybody. If your book club is too tame you're just sitting around nodding at each other, what's even the point of getting together?

I used to think nancy_smith was joking about needing a referee, but after a fight over a book's ending, I get it now. Maybe a quick rule about no personal attacks could help?
