Our club read a classic and a modern take back to back
We did 'Pride and Prejudice' in March, then 'The Other Bennet Sister' in April. The classic took us 2 meetings to unpack, everyone had notes. The modern retelling felt flat, like the new author just checked boxes. The real debate was about depth versus accessibility. Half the group loved the easier read, but I missed Austen's subtle humor. Which gives a better book club talk, the original source or a clever remake?

Wait you spent two whole meetings on the original book? That's a serious deep dive. I get why the retelling felt flat, those books often just copy the plot without the soul. The original always sparks a better talk for me, even if it's harder, because there's just more to pick apart.

We actually spent the first meeting just on the footnotes in my copy. The translator added a note about the original word for "shadow" having a double meaning the retelling completely lost. That missing layer is what makes the discussion feel thin.

Sometimes the retelling is the only way people even find the original. A simpler version can be a good starting point.
