Our club picked a 700 page doorstop for January and half of us quit by week two
I run a small book club out of my garage in Boise, eight people, and I pushed hard for a shorter pick this time because December killed us. We did a 700 page monster, and by the second Tuesday only four people showed up, and two of those had not cracked it past page 90. Everyone online says thick books are worth it if the payoff is good, but I disagree, I think a club pick has to fit the group's real life, not its aspirational one. Here is my number: in five years running this thing, the three longest books we chose had the lowest turnout of any picks, average 3.2 people out of nine. Nobody wants to admit they did not finish, so they just stop coming, and then the club quietly dies. Am I wrong for wanting a page limit rule, like nothing over 400 pages unless the whole group votes yes?
