My book club president said not to read the last chapter first, I ignored her

Back in 2019, our club president warned me that starting a mystery novel from the final chapter ruins the payoff. I thought I knew better and peeked at the ending of 'The Silent Patient' before our meeting. Turns out, the whole twist hinged on that buildup, and I completely missed the emotional gut punch everyone else got. Now I just nod when she gives advice about pacing or spoilers. Has anyone else blown a book experience by ignoring a simple warning from your group?

Wait you read The Silent Patient backwards? That's like watching The Sixth Sense starting with the last scene. The whole point of that book is the rug pull at the end, and you just saw the rug coming from a mile away. I don't blame you for nodding along now, that kind of miss stays with you. Do you ever get the urge to secretly check the last page of other books or did that kill it for good?

Best way to kill that habit is to physically cover the last page with a sticky note before you even start reading. Keeps you honest and the author's work stays intact.
