My book club moderator told me to stop picking "easy reads" and it backfired completely
So our club moderator Susan kept saying we needed more "challenging literature" instead of the fun mystery novels we usually pick. I pushed for a classic that got RAVE reviews online. Turned out it was 500 pages of dense writing about a guy walking through 1800s London. Half the group didn't finish it and 3 people quit the club. Now Susan is texting me asking if we can go back to the easy stuff. Has anyone else's book club fallen apart over one bad pick?

I used to be the person pushing for harder books too, honestly. Thought everyone should challenge themselves. But after a group I was in fell apart over "The Sound and the Fury" you just cant force people to read something they hate. That five hundred page guy walking through London sounds like a nightmare for a casual club. Reading for fun should be fun, not a chore that makes people quit.

Wait hang on, I think you might be giving that 500 page book too much credit. I read "Bleak House" last year thinking it would be a nice deep read and it was actually like 900 pages of fog and court cases. Nobody in my group got past page 100. The problem wasn't just the dense writing, it was that nobody actually wanted to read a book that felt like homework. Sometimes "easy reads" are just more fun and that's okay.
