My book club friend changed my mind on endings, and I'm still mad about it
Last Tuesday at our meeting in Portland, Dana said the ending of The Great Gatsby was actually hopeful, not tragic. I laughed out loud, not gonna lie. But she broke it down, pointing out how Nick walks away from the East with a clearer head, and that's a win in her book. I spent two days arguing with myself about it. I've read that book 6 times since college and always saw it as a total downer. Now I can't unsee her point, and it's bugging me that a 10 minute chat flipped my whole take. Has anyone else had a club member reframe a classic so hard you had to rethink your stance?
