I thought our book club was too soft on plot holes, then a stranger at a Cleveland diner set me straight
Last week at our book club meeting in Cleveland, I said we were all being too nice to the author and ignoring a huge plot hole in chapter 12. Everyone just nodded and moved on, which made me feel like I was the only one who cared about holding books to a high standard. The next morning I was eating breakfast at a diner on West 25th and the guy at the counter saw my copy of the book. He asked me what I thought, so I told him my gripes. He looked at me and said, "Sometimes a story is about the feeling, not the puzzle." That hit me harder than I expected. Now I am not so sure we need to nitpick every little gap. How do you all decide when a plot hole is worth bringing up versus just letting the story breathe?
