Hot take: I was the book club jerk who marked every plot hole, and one member's note made me quit doing it
For two years in my Denver book club I kept a running list of every plot hole and posted it in our group chat after each meeting. After we finished a 480 page mystery in June, a retired teacher named Carol sent me a private message asking if I had ever written anything myself. I admitted I had not. She suggested I write just 10 pages of fiction before marking up the next book, so I did, and it took me nine days to figure out basic stuff like why a character would walk instead of drive somewhere. Now I still notice the holes, I just ask the group about them out loud instead of scoring the author. Any of you ever get told to make something before you critique it?
