Finally read a physical book vs audiobook of the same story and wow what a difference

I picked up "The Night Circus" for book club last month. Listened to the first 100 pages on audio during my commute and felt like I was missing something. Downloaded the ebook and read from the start. The audiobook was fine but the physical version let me flip back to catch details about the tents and timelines. Half the group listened and half read and our discussion got heated over who understood the ending better lol. Anyone else try both formats for the same book and get totally different takeaways?

Toss my vote in the "physical copy wins" column too, but not without some drama. Got into it with my cousin over a thriller where the audiobook botched a crucial clue because the narrator pronounced a suspect's name wrong, making it sound like a different person entirely. We spent an hour arguing who was supposed to be the killer until I pulled out my dog-eared paperback and literally pointed at the page. She still insisted her version was correct because "the voice actor's delivery made it more suspenseful." Guess some people just like being wrong in style.

I get what you're saying but I actually kinda disagree. The narrator messing up the name is a fair point, but audiobooks can catch those twists in other ways. Like with The Night Circus, the voice actors gave each character such a distinct tone that I picked up on connections way faster than when I tried reading the physical version. Different mediums just hit different parts of the brain sometimes.

Did your group figure out if the physical readers had an advantage with the non-linear timeline stuff? I heard The Night Circus jumps around a lot and I bet flipping back in a book makes that way easier than rewinding audio. I did this with a mystery novel once and realized the audiobook completely skipped a footnote that was crucial to the plot. Were there specific details that only the physical version caught for you?
