Debate over hardcover vs paperback at my book club ended with a compromise

Our group spent 45 minutes arguing about whether we should only pick hardcovers or allow paperbacks too. I wanted hardcovers because they hold up better when you toss them in a bag, but half the club said they're too expensive at $18 each. We settled on a rule where we do hardcovers for longer books over 400 pages and paperbacks for shorter ones. Has anyone else found a middle ground that actually works for their group?

The 400 page cutoff is pretty solid. We do something similar but we also let people bring whatever copy they already own as long as it's the right edition. Saves everyone from having to rebuy books they already have on their shelf.

Does anyone else's group just let people bring whatever copy they already have like @thomas_martinez said?

400 pages is actually pretty generous, our group cutoff is 300.
