Why I stopped judging helper welds by how they look before I run a bead over them
Had a kid on my crew last month in Gary tack up a header and I almost told him to grind it out because the ripples looked sloppy, then I ran my root over it and it laid in cleaner than anything I did that week. Turns out he was running about 8 degrees colder than me and dragging slower, which on that 1/4 inch plate gave him better penetration than my hot and fast passes ever got. I've been doing this 14 years and I still catch myself eyeballing a bead instead of cutting a test coupon, which is the only way to actually know. Anyone else got a story where the ugly weld held and the pretty one failed a bend test?
