Went to a refinery shutdown in Baton Rouge and everyone was raving about those new ceramic stud welding guns
Honestly, I gotta disagree with the hype. I watched a guy struggle with one for like 20 minutes on a tube sheet repair because the ground clamp kept slipping on the rusty surface. Meanwhile I was across the way using a standard stud welder with a fresh vice grip clamp and had my row done in half the time. Am I missing something or do these fancy ceramic setups just complicate a simple job?

Preach. Had the exact same headache with one on a rusty tank wall last month.

Maybe the hype is coming from guys who mostly do clean factory work, not field repairs covered in rust and grime. The ceramic tips are great for controlled bench setups but fall apart on sketchy surfaces. Nobody talks about how those guns get finicky when you're fighting a bad ground on a pipe rack.
