Warning: the ASME code book says a 2 inch weld gap needs 3 passes, my foreman says 2
I looked it up in the Section IX book at the Hall last Tuesday and showed him the table, but he just shrugged and said he's been doing it his way since 1998, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has had to push back on an old hand over pass counts.
Sounds like your foreman is gambling with someone else's cert on the line. Section IX is the code, not a suggestion, and 3 passes on a 2 inch gap is what the table calls for whether he likes it or not. Been doing it since 1998 just means he has been wrong longer than some of us have been welding. Get it in writing from your CWI or QA so when the RT comes back ugly it is not your name on the repair.
