Tried a new technique for tube bending with sand and heat

I always thought heating and sand-filling tubes was old school nonsense until I had to bend a 3-inch schedule 40 pipe for a job in Gary last month. I spent two hours messing with a bender and kept getting kinks, so I finally tried the sand and torch method on a scrap piece. The result was a perfect 90-degree bend with zero flattening. Anyone else still use this method or am I just behind the times?

What type of sand did you use, play sand or something coarser?

Read a forum post last week from this old timer who swears by filling tubes with play sand from the hardware store. He said the secret is to pack it super tight and cap both ends with wooden plugs before you even think about heat. Tried it myself on a 2 inch pipe for a railing job and yeah the bend came out clean as heck. No kinks no weird flat spots just a nice smooth curve. The sand really does stop the walls from collapsing in on themselves. Plus its way cheaper than buying a specialized bender for bigger pipes. Wild how something that simple still works better than half the fancy tools out there.

Three weeks ago I woulda told you packing sand in a pipe was some old wives tale from grandpa's garage... but I tried it on a 1.5 inch piece for a handrail and it bent like butter. No lie, I was wrong about that trick.
