The weight of a 12-inch carbon steel pipe surprised the hell out of me

I looked up the spec sheet last Tuesday and a 12-inch schedule 80 pipe weighs around 54 pounds per foot, so a 20-foot stick is over a thousand pounds and that made me rethink every rigging job I did for the last 5 years, anyone else ever trust the crane a little too much without checking the numbers first?

Numbers get ignored because nobody wants to slow down a job that's already moving, but a few minutes with a chart saves a whole lot of trouble later. Funny how that same laziness shows up everywhere, like people overloading their pickup beds because the tires look fine.
