That welder's trick about preheating with a rosebud torch saved my neck on a 2-inch plate job

I always thought preheating was a waste of gas until last Tuesday in Gary, Indiana, a 2-inch plate cracked right down the middle on a cold morning, so has anyone else switched and what temp do you actually hold it at?

Saw a forum post last month saying 300 degrees is the sweet spot, but your cracked plate makes me wonder.
