That talk with an old foreman changed how I look at my welds

I was chatting with a retired foreman at the union hall last week. He told me he could tell who skipped their preheat by how cracks formed in the weld toes. Said it was a dead giveaway every time. That hit different because I've been rushing preheat on small jobs thinking nobody would notice. Has anyone else had an old timer point out something simple that totally changed your approach?

Maybe it's just me but that sounds like one of those old timer stories that gets bigger every time it's told. Pretty sure most cracks tell the same story regardless of preheat.

Funny enough, a buddy of mine had a similar wake-up call when an old pipefitter showed him how a grinder finish told him who was prepping for a real weld or just making it look pretty. Makes you slow down and think twice, you know?

Whoa, that's wild. A grinder finish tells you all that?
