Stopped by a refinery in Baton Rouge last month and noticed half the crews are using those new magnetic clamps instead of traditional welding magnets.

Is anyone else seeing these things take over on tube sheets or is it just a regional thing down here?

Nah, I'm not sold on them yet. Seen too many of those magnetic clamps fail when you need them most. They slip off if the tube sheet has any residue or warping. Traditional welding magnets are cheap and they work every time. Plus you can beat on them with a hammer when they get crusty. All this new gear just complicates things.

I'll play the other side on this one. I've been running those magnetic clamps for six months now on tube sheets and they hold way better than the old ones once you get the hang of the setup. Less cleanup too since the magnetic surface doesn't trap as much slag and spatter.
