Shoutout to the old-timer who saved my nozzle Saturday

Last Saturday out in Gary, I was fighting a stubborn rotary head on a 30 year old boiler, about to scrap the whole fitting. This retired boilermaker, Bob, wandered over from the fence line and told me to heat the threads with a propane rosebud for 90 seconds before even touching the wrench. It spun off clean as anything, and he just nodded like it was obvious. Has anyone else had a random veteran drop a tip that saved you hours on site?

Ngl that story hits close to home. Did you ask Bob how he knew the exact timing on the heat? Because that's the part that always gets me with these old timers. They don't just guess, they've got a feel for the metal that you can't get from a manual. I've burned up more than a few fittings guessing wrong on the heat, so I'd want to pick his brain about what the tell was. Was it the color of the steel or just the sound it made when he tapped it?
