Found a trick for getting better fit-up on thick shell plate seams
Been fighting with misaligned edges on 1 inch plate for a few weeks now. Tried using those magnetic squares and clamps but kept slipping. Anyone else ever use a chain binder to pull the plates tight before tacking?

You tried clamping the edges with the magnetic squares and they kept slipping? Chain binder works better if you weld a couple of tabs on the plate to hook into. Just make sure you preheat the weld area so the tabs don't cause cracks.

Oh yeah, preheating is a must with tabs on thicker plate or the weld can shrink and pull a crack right where you don't want it. Have you tried tacking them on with a bead and then letting it cool slowly before welding out the full joint?
