Finally tried flux core wire over solid wire on a rusty job.

I had a repair on an old tank in Houston where solid wire kept blowing holes. Swapped to flux core and it actually held the bead clean. Has anyone else noticed that much difference on dirty metal?

That old tank in Houston probably had years of rust soaked into every seam. @brian_rivera59 is right about flux core handling dirty metal like magic. Solid wire just fights you on rust, spitting and burning right through the second you hit a thin spot. Flux core lets you drag the puddle faster without all that panic. It's not as pretty as solid wire on clean plate, but for junk metal it's the only way to go. Stick it to the rust and move on.

Oh man yeah flux core is a total game changer on rust buckets! I had this old trailer frame that was nothing but scale and pitting and solid wire just made a mess everywhere sputtering and burning through. Switched to flux core with the same machine settings and it laid down like butter even on the thinnest spots. It's wild how much better it handles the dirty stuff without that constant cleanup of chasing pinholes. Definitely saves a headache when you're stuck welding on junk metal.
