Why does nobody check the rulebook before teaching a game

I was at a game night last Saturday and a guy spent 10 minutes explaining Wingspan wrong. He had the whole feeding phase backwards. When I gently pointed it out, he said 'I've taught this 20 times, I know how it works.' We looked it up and sure enough, he was wrong. This happens every other month at least. Why do people insist on teaching from memory instead of just glancing at the rulebook for 30 seconds first? Has anyone else noticed this getting worse lately?

Got a friend who watched someone teach Catan with the robber blocking resource production for a solid hour before anyone realized it was wrong.

Tried teaching my dad Monopoly once and he thought Free Parking paid taxes for two hours.
