Vent: My game group split over a house rule for Catan
We used to let people trade resources after the dice roll, but now we stick to the book because two players kept arguing. The change happened after a big fight last month about a wood trade. Should house rules ever be allowed in competitive groups?

Riley's right about everyone agreeing. But that's just the start. You need to write it down, like a real rule. Like "trades after the dice roll are okay, but only for one minute." If it's not written, people forget or argue. Your wood trade fight proves it. A clear written rule stops the "but you said" stuff before it starts.

House rules only work if everyone agrees.

I mean it's like that with anything in a group really. You see it at work too, like when someone says "we should focus on this project" but nobody writes it down or says when it's due. Then a week later everyone's doing their own thing and blaming each other. idk why people think games are different from real life in that way. Maybe it's just me but I've noticed the same pattern in my D&D group - we had to write down literally everything or someone would "forget" a rule that helped them lose last time. House rules need that written agreement step or they're just suggestions.
