Turns out Catan only has 19 hex tiles. I counted from the rulebook after losing a 3-hour game last night.

Everyone always talks about how Catan is all about strategy and luck with the dice. But nobody ever mentions the actual board size. I was sure there were more hexes but nope, 19 is the magic number. It's kinda wild how such a small setup can lead to so many arguments over sheep.

lol "19 hexes but somehow zero sheep" is the most relatable thing I've read today. I saw a post the other day where someone did the math and said the sheep distribution in Catan is actually broken, like there's some algorithm issue with how the numbers are placed that makes it way harder to get sheep than it should be. Idk if that's true but it sure feels like it when you're stuck with 4 wheat and 3 brick but no sheep to trade. I remember reading some forum where a guy tracked 50 games and sheep came up like 20% less than expected on the 6 and 8 spots. It's honestly why I always try to grab that sheep port early if I can, or I'll just hoard sheep from the start even if it messes up my other resource plans.
