Tried teaching my family a new game with a custom cheat sheet

I printed a one page rules summary for Cascadia last weekend, thinking it would help my parents learn faster. Instead, my dad spent the whole first game just reading the sheet out loud and asking about every single term. We barely finished a round in an hour. I learned that too much info upfront can really slow down a first play. What's your best method for teaching a game to total newbies without overwhelming them?

Oh man, that sounds exactly like my aunt! I made a quick reference card for Ticket to Ride once and she treated it like holy scripture, reading every line twice before placing a single train. It totally kills the fun when you have to sit through a full rule lecture. Now I just set up the board and jump right into a sample turn, explaining things as we go. People get it way faster when they can see it happening instead of just hearing a list of rules.

Your dad read the entire sheet out loud? lmao that's a special kind of torture right there. I just explain the main goal first, then do a practice round where we all play open hands. Dumping all the rules at once just makes everyone's eyes glaze over.

My uncle does the full rulebook read too. Honestly, it's like five minutes of everyone zoning out before the game even starts. I get the pain, but it's just board game night, not a final exam. People act like it's a huge deal when we're all just there to have a beer and roll some dice.
