Three hours trying to figure out why my game board smelled like old socks

I bought a used copy of Terraforming Mars at a garage sale last Saturday and the whole box had this weird musty smell I couldn't shake. I spent my entire Sunday afternoon pulling out tiles one by one, wiping them down with vinegar solution, and letting them air out on my kitchen counter. Has anyone else dealt with a stinky thrifted game that took way too long to fix?

Man, I feel your pain on this. Picked up a copy of Betrayal at House on the Hill from a flea market once and it smelled like someone stored it in a damp basement for years. Had to individually wipe each card with a dry cloth and leave them in a single layer on my dining table for two whole days. The tiles in Terraforming Mars are small and there's so many of them - that must have been a real test of patience. Did the vinegar trick actually get rid of the smell completely, or is there still a slight hint of it?

My buddy tried the vinegar thing on some used Catan tiles and... yeah.
