Teaching my kids Catan after 8 years of competitive play backfired hard

I tried running a family game night with my 9 and 11 year old using my usual tournament rules and they both quit by turn 3, so now I'm wondering if I should just let them trade like they want instead of enforcing the "no charity" rule?

Oh man, been there! What finally worked for us was playing "baby Catan" first where the kids can trade whatever they want, even one for one dumb trades. Once they got hooked and actually wanted to win, they started caring about rules on their own.
