My uncle's advice about Catan first moves backfired hard.

He said always put your first settlement on a brick and ore spot, no exceptions. Tried it last Friday night and got stuck with no wood for the first 8 turns. Has anyone else had a family member's "pro tip" ruin a game for you?

Man, that's rough. But here's the thing nobody's brought up yet - maybe your uncle's advice works fine, but only if you're the first to pick your starting spot. If you're fourth pick, all the good brick and ore spots are already taken. @gavinlopez, you asked about dice luck, but I think the bigger problem is how the board was set up. If there's only one or two good brick and ore spots and everyone else grabs them first, you're stuck on a bad leftover. Your uncle probably plays with the same people who always let him pick first. That's the real trick nobody talks about. Next time, just take the best settlement available even if it doesn't fit his rules.

Yeah, I read somewhere that board setup and pick order are way more important than people give credit for. A buddy of mine swears by a rule where you should always grab the three best numbered hexes regardless of resources, and that often works better in crowded games. If your uncle's advice only works when you're first to pick, it's not really advice, it's more like playing with an advantage.

So was the brick and ore spot a total desert or just shitty luck with the dice rolls?
