My FLGS owner warned me about buying used games sight unseen and now I'm out $65
Last month the owner of my local game store in Sacramento told me to always open a used box and count the pieces before paying, no matter how good the deal looks. I ignored him because I found a copy of a heavy euro on a marketplace app for $65, which was half of retail. The listing said complete and the photos looked fine, so I paid and waited 8 days for shipping. When it showed up, the box had 14 missing wooden bits, two torn cards, and a punched board that had been folded wrong. The seller blocked me the second I asked for a refund. So now I'm asking you all, do you always do a piece count before buying secondhand, or do you just gamble and hope for the best?
My buddy Dave in Reno dropped $80 on a "complete" copy of Brass Birmingham from some guy on Facebook and found 9 missing iron cubes plus a warped board when it arrived. He did a full count on his next three buys and caught a missing deck of cards in one of them, so now he swears by it. Takes 5 minutes and saves you a whole headache, the seller's photos will never tell you the truth.
How does he handle the awkward part when something actually is missing? Because that is the part that stops me from doing it. Like, do you message the seller and say hey you shorted me nine iron cubes, and then what, they just ghost you? I get that counting saves you from a bad buy, but once the money is gone and the box is at your house, is a PayPal claim really worth the hassle over a few missing pieces? Seems like the real move is counting before you pay, not after.
