My D&D group's 'forever DM' dropped a truth bomb on me last night
I was complaining about how our group never gets to try new board games because we always play the same 3. He looked at me and said 'you're not a board game geek, you're a comfort geek who just likes the same thing every time.' It hit me hard because he was right. I spend more time reading reviews and watching unboxing videos than actually playing new stuff. Now I'm wondering if I'm more into the idea of being into board games than the actual hobby itself. Has anyone else had a friend call them out on their gaming habits like that?

Oh man, your forever DM really nailed you with that one (and honestly, I feel like I just got called out too). I do the exact same thing with video games - I’ll spend hours watching reviews and let’s plays of some big RPG, get all excited to play it, then just boot up Skyrim for the hundredth time because it’s comfortable. Last month I literally bought a new board game, watched three unboxing videos for it, and then my group just played Catan again instead of learning the new one. It’s weird how easy it is to mistake the hype for the actual hobby.

3 hours of video essays on Baldur's Gate 3 and I still haven't made it past character creation, not exactly a bad thing if I'm still having fun. @xena1 is right, comfort in old favorites isn't a crime, it's just a different kind of hobby.

@hollyc92, is it so bad to find comfort in old favorites?
