My buddy in our Des Moines group called my teaching style 'aggressive' after I steamrolled a new player through a game of Scythe.

I started using a 'watch one round, then jump in' method instead, and it actually gets people hooked faster, so has anyone else had to completely rework how they introduce a complex game?

My first time teaching Terraforming Mars was a total disaster, I just dumped all the rules at once. Now I explain just the goal and let them figure out the first generation, which works way better. It turns a lecture into a game.

Reminds me of my friend who tried teaching Scythe like @adams.linda's first try, just a total rules avalanche that lost everyone.

Oh man, did you ever try to learn Ark Nova from someone who just read the rulebook out loud? I sat there for an hour before we even touched a card, totally checked out. Now I just show people how to build one enclosure and play a card, then we start.
