My brother's kid said board games are 'like a phone you can hold' and it made me think about how we show them this hobby.

He's eight, and after we played Forbidden Island he told me it was 'like a phone you can hold' because everyone was looking at the same thing and talking, which really made me wonder if we focus too much on complex rules over the shared space a game creates.

That's a really smart way for a kid to see it. Do you think we get too caught up in teaching the rules perfectly instead of just letting that shared experience happen? It seems like the talking and looking together is the whole point he noticed.

What if rules kill the joy?

Consider how many kids learn to love reading by being read to, not by perfect grammar lessons. Does focusing on rules first actually build a wall around the fun part, the shared story? Maybe we're teaching the map before letting them enjoy the trip.
