Had to explain house rules at game night for the 5th time last night
We were playing Catan at my place in Austin and three people kept arguing over whether you can build a road through a settlement. I thought everyone knew that rule but turns out they were mixing up versions from different groups they play with. I finally pulled up the official rulebook on my phone and it settled things but took like 20 minutes. Has anyone else found that different playgroups have totally different versions of the same game rules?

Man I've been THERE. What works for me is printing out the house rules and the official ones together and taping them to the board box. That way when someone says "well at Steve's house we do it THIS way" you can just point at the paper and say "not at MY table." Also helps to go over the big ones before anyone rolls the dice. Five minutes upfront saves you an hour of arguing later. I actually keep a laminated rules sheet inside every game I own now.

Laminated rules sheets are genius, I started doing that too after one too many Monopoly arguments at my place.
