Appreciation post: my weekly game group finally tried co-op games in April, and it fixed our table
I spent two years swearing that co-op games were just solitaire with extra steps, but after we lost a 6 player round of Arkham Horror at my friend's place in Mesa last month, nobody argued over rules once and we all just wanted to run it back.
The thing nobody talks about with co-op is how it changes who gets stuck being the rules lawyer. In a versus game somebody always has to win an argument about line of sight or turn order, and that person becomes the bad guy for the night. Co-op flips it so the rule checks become a group puzzle instead of a fight, and the guy who knows the rulebook turns into the helpful one. Our group has one player who used to get side eye every time he pulled out the manual, and now people actually hand it to him. Losing together also takes the sting out because nobody has to take the blame alone. Sounds like your Mesa night proved the same thing.
